There were inconsistency issue in our database as asked in this question. Same is fixed now and database is running without any issue.

I noticed that SQL service was rebooted many times in last 3 days(as per the errorlog) and this reboot took only 1 to 2 seconds and to my surprise, nobody noticed this whereas this happened in business hour. This is a production database and is used heavily, meaning every second there is 1-3 transaction hitting database.

I noted the time of reboot of service or last few days and noticed that at the same time(every time), one file is created with the name "HkEngineEventFile_0_XXXX" of size 68KB. tried to open that in different tool but, didn't get any info.

HKEngineEvent_0_XXX

Can somebody please help me understanding this and also I need to understand whether it was a real reboot of service or something else.

Below are the entry from SQL errorlog:

  • The HkEngineEventFile_0_XXXX look to be extended event files. Open your extended events and look at the contents of those files. It may provide clues as to what's going on. Additionally, look at your ERRORLOGS, specifically at the last events in them prior to the service restarts. You may also need to dig through your Windows Event Logs looking for clues about why your SQL Server service is restarting. If you're getting dump files generated, opening a ticket with Microsoft should be your next course of action as they can dig into those more thoroughly. – John Eisbrener Jul 8 at 13:27
  • @JohnEisbrener There was inconsistency issue reported by DBCC checkdb and is fixed now however I wanted to know whether it was really service reboot(as written in SQL errorlog) or something else as no user complained of any issue. And reboot took just 1 second, its beyond my belief that, it can restart in 1 second. – Learning_DBAdmin Jul 9 at 5:51

That's the output of an "internal" Extended Events (XE) session that provides troubleshooting information for In-Memory OLTP (Hekaton) tables. Although it doesn't show up in the SSMS GUI, you can see where it's defined in the DMVs:

SELECT
    s.[name],
    s.session_source,
    st.target_name,
    soc.column_name,
    soc.column_value
FROM sys.dm_xe_sessions s
    INNER JOIN sys.dm_xe_session_targets st
        ON st.event_session_address = s.[address]
    INNER JOIN sys.dm_xe_session_object_columns soc
        ON soc.event_session_address = s.[address]
WHERE
    s.[name] = 'hkenginexesession'
    AND st.target_name = 'event_file'
    AND soc.object_type = 'target'
ORDER BY s.[name], soc.column_name;

Which displays these results:

name                session_source  target_name column_name         column_value
hkenginexesession   internal        event_file  filename            HkEngineEventFile.xel
hkenginexesession   internal        event_file  increment           0
hkenginexesession   internal        event_file  lazy_create_blob    true
hkenginexesession   internal        event_file  max_file_size       5
hkenginexesession   internal        event_file  max_rollover_files  20
hkenginexesession   internal        event_file  metadatafile        NULL

As you can see, it can have up to 20 files at a time before they start to get overwritten.

68 KB is just the minimum amount of data written to that file (the basic outer XML structure), so you must not be using Hekaton.

New files will get created for the normal reasons (service restart, server restart, event session stop / start, etc). There might be other reasons that internal sessions rollover, but I am not aware of any.

Note that the SQL Server log output you showed does indicate that SQL Server was restarted, and is starting up - and the timing lines up with one of the .xel files in your screenshot (7/7 at 4:51 PM).

Finally, you may want to look into those last few lines of the log, and possibly open a case with Microsoft, as it looks like SQL Server may be producing crash dump files:

ex_dump_if_requested: Exception raised, major=52, minor=42, state=9, severity=22, attempting to create symptom dump
Using 'dbghelp.dll' version '4.0.5'
