I'm working on relocating my mongodb data directory from its default path to a volume which is mounted from an SSD drive to achieve more I/O performance.

I know this fact that every day when I backup my databases and before compressing them, my backup folder contains over 50GB of data. Today I realized that mongodb data directory has just taken 16GB of my storage.
So these are my questions:

  1. Could you explain what's the reason for this difference? Is there any other place in which mongodb stores data?
  2. Is it enough to relocate mongodb's data directory to improve mongodb's I/O performance?
