I want to store a lot of rows in a table, but I will often want to select only some of them, depending of their type. So I could just add a column
type to each row, but then, if I want to select only the rows of one type, I'll have to make a query like
SELECT * FROM MyTable WHERE type = 1 for example. But does it mean that the DBMS will have to fetch all the table, even if only a few rows have the type that I want?
