I am running a fresh install of Windows 11 trying to set up a local SQL server for development.

I installed SQL server 2019 from ISO, however am unable to start the server. Same method of install and ISO works fine on my Windows 10 machine.

I have searched online and have seen similar issues posted.. however have not been able to find a solution or workaround.

Did you try applying a later CU than RTM, like CU11? Or you could try building a slipstream install and uninstall / reinstall. Also is there a stack dump in the log directory? There's really not enough info in the event viewer snippet you posted to help track down a cause, but Microsoft support will really be able to pinpoint the cause if applying a later patch doesn't help. @AaronBertrand I have tried this on CU11-13 and all give the same issue. The bottom stack is from the SQL Server LOG folder, only event view is showing an error. Also, not sure if this is related in anyway, but in the SQL LOG it is saying I'm running Windows 10 Pro rather than Windows 11 Pro... Developer Edition (64-bit) on Windows 10 Pro 10.0 <X64> (Build 22000: ) I am now getting the same failure but with ntdll.dll instead. Oct 11 at 20:08
  • Right, I am talking about the log directory, not the file called errorlog. There is a folder on the server machine called Log - C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL15.MSSQLSERVER\MSSQL\Log. Check there for files named SQLDump*.log/.txt/.mdmp. Oct 11 at 20:20
  • Anyway, I don't think your peers are going to be equipped to help you beyond completely wiping SQL Server and starting over. You're likely to get much better help from Microsoft support (and if this is due to a bug rather than some kind of misconfiguration, you won't have to pay). Oct 11 at 20:24
  • @AaronBertrand The only logs in that folder are titled ERRORLOG. I am getting this error before the server even boots for the first time. Just removed all SQL related programs as well as Visual Studio and did a reinstall... got the same error at the end of install when it tried to start the server. Oct 11 at 21:11
