I need to sync few database tables (Not every table and not every column of the table) from one SQL Server (Standard Edition) to multiple SQL Server Express editions in different locations all connected via VPN.

what is the best way to do this? Please keep in mind that the target SQL Servers are all Express editions and thus cannot use replication, log shipping etc.

Please let me know any solution or any products that does this.

Thank you

I think the premise for your question is not correct. "Express editions and thus cannot use replication, log shipping etc" --- That is not true. Express Edition can be a subscriber to Replication. There are also roll-your-own options for log shipping. Do either/both of these meet your needs?

Also do you need it as one time load? or are you looking for incremental changes as well, if so what frequency are you looking for ex. Nightly, hourly etc. May 10 at 15:41
  • Frequency will be need to be instant or max 1 hour intervals. I do not expect huge amounts of data synced all the time. Replication is also not available. Please suggest options. May 10 at 17:21

@KevinJames What you're describing is the perfect use case for Transactional Replication, which is available for Standard Edition Publisher-->Express Edition Subscriber. Can you elaborate on why you say "Replication is also not available"?

  • If replication isn't an option, you could write an SSIS package that runs on the Standard edition server that pushes the data to the Express Editions. Standard Edition has a SQL Agent, so you could create a job schedule.
