I'm modelling a data warehouse based on star schema, and now I'm implementing the dimensions and fact tables in Sql developer. For creating dimensions I found statements in Oracle documentation as CREATE DIMENSION and HIERARCHY, and also found examples building the dimensions and fact tables as normal tables using CREATE TABLE statement.

I would like to know that's the difference and what should we use for creating dimensions in Oracle.

  • 'Create dimension' doesn't create a star schema dimension table. It's to do with defining rollup hierarchies. To be honest I've never seen it used and I'm not sure what it does, though.
