I'm struggling to find out whether there is a constraint I can impose on a row with an integer value, such that any update on that row must have an integer value strictly greater than the value that already exists in the table.

Do I need to use a trigger to do this, or is there a clever way to use constraints to do this?

Note, I don't want a serial type since I do not want it to autoincrement.

I don't think this can be expressed with a constraint. You will have to use a trigger Mar 15 at 6:11
