I want to distribute/release/publish a database schema to multiple 3rd parties (e.g. I'll produce a zip for them to download and they'll set up their database using it). They aren't all using the same RDBMS.

Is there a standard way to do this? Can I use an accepted subset of SQL?

Note that I'm not distributing an application (just the data model) so can't use any database agnostic libraries to set the db up.

  • If your data model uses only SQL standard constructs and no DBMS-specific features, then it should be possible to distribute a DDL script that will work on most DBMSes with no or little modification. Which DBMS and tools are you using? – Colin 't Hart Feb 3 '14 at 13:08
  • I would like the DDL to work with as many DBMSes as possible and we are using a bespoke tool to generate whatever we'll distribute. – ashirley Feb 3 '14 at 14:09
