I currently inherited an InnoDB table that describes a product. In the table there are a few columns that describe the maximum height at which the product may be mounted.

These are the columns:

HeightMaxExterior
HeightMaxExteriorInsect
HeightMaxInterior
HeightMaxConcession
HeightMaxPassThru

I was thinking perhaps of creating a new table: MaxHeight that had the following columns:

Id, Height, Type, ItemCode, Context

Id, Height, and ItemCode are pretty self explanatory. Type would be an enum, of either 'max', or 'min', and Context would be an enum for 'interior', 'exterior', 'concession', 'passthru', and 'insect'.

Should I create this new table? Or should I just leave it as it is?

  • Are the current fields ints, varchar, or something else? – Simon Righarts Feb 12 '14 at 0:34
  • All of the fields are ints. The new fields would be: Int, Int, enum, varchar, enum - respectively. – Nathan Lutterman Feb 12 '14 at 3:07
