I am trying to query the syspublications table on Linked Server A from Server B. Both servers are running SQL Server 2012. Using this simple query on Server B:

SELECT a.dest_table
FROM [ServerA].<DBNAME>.dbo.sysarticles a , [ServerA].<DBName>.dbo.syspublications p
WHERE a.pubid = p.pubid AND p.NAME = 'my publication name'

I receive the following error:

Msg 7314, Level 16, State 1, Line 152The OLE DB provider "SQLNCLI11" for linked server "Server-A" does not contain the table ""<DBNAME>"."dbo"."sysarticles"". The table either does not exist or the current user does not have permissions on that table.

To rule out permissions issues, I have set up the Linked Server A to authenticate with a user who has system admin permissions on Linked Server A. I can query all user-defined tables without issue.

What obvious thing am I overlooking?

  • the query run fine when executed on the home server directly? – Paolo Oct 8 '14 at 7:18
  • Are these databases involved in replication? Does the table/view exist in database? – James Anderson Oct 8 '14 at 9:02
  • I was able to "resolve" the issue by deleting and re-creating the Linked Server. – DMill Oct 8 '14 at 16:29
