SELECT
  student.StudentID,
  student.`Name`,
  COUNT(attendance.AttendanceID) AS Total
FROM
  student
LEFT JOIN attendance ON student.StudentID = attendance.StudentID

I am trying to count the last row but instead it counts all the results and returns one result

I am getting something like

enter image description here

as there are multiple records because there are two entries in Attendance ID for K1052280 I want to count those and return the number. Something like

enter image description here

20

You are just missing the GROUP BY

YOUR QUERY WITH GROUP BY

SELECT
  student.StudentID,
  student.`Name`,
  COUNT(attendance.AttendanceID) AS Total
FROM
  student
LEFT JOIN attendance ON student.StudentID = attendance.StudentID
GROUP BY student.StudentID,student.`Name`;

  • Thanks for this clear explanation. Now, one more question. How can I sort the table on Total or filter out the records where Total = 0? – Zonker.in.Geneva Sep 25 '18 at 10:22
