mysqldump fails to dump database
I think what you need to do is:
mysqldump -u[username] -p[password] -h[hostname] --databases [database] | gzip > [backup file path].sql.gz
or
mysqldump -u[username] -p[password] -h[hostname] --all- … -databases | gzip > [backup file path].sql.gz
