Privileges for database owner; application user

You want ALTER DEFAULT PRIVILEGES. Give the rds_superuser default access rights to all new tables. This only affects tables created after the ALTER. For existing tables you must GRANT rights.

PostgreSQL on Amazon RDS: out of memory error on bytea field > 64MB

PostgreSQL's handling of large binary fields is very memory-inefficient. It's quite normal for it to keep three or more copies of a given field in memory when procesing a row, albeit briefly. One TOAS …

Installing a language with Amazon RDS?

You can't do this on RDS. The rds_superuser isn't a true superuser and cannot load any C-language extensions.

How to connect to an Amazon PostgreSQL database using SSL

Many connection options aren't available as command line flags. That's one of them. Use a connection string, e.g.: psql "host=XXXX.rds.XXXX.com sslmode=require sslrootcert=rds-ssl-ca-cert.pem port=XX …

How does Amazon create the RDS for Postgres? Some kind of Docker?

Amazon doesn't talk about this much and the servers are intentionally locked down, so it's hard to be completely sure. They're EC2 instances that run a custom AMI and have automation tools - in-house …

Amazon RDS Postgresql adding new extensions

You can't add your own extensions to RDS, at least not ones that require superuser rights (like anything with C code). This is one of the downsides you accept in exchange for convenient management. I …

What does exec(text) do?

It's a totally pointless function that executes arbitrary SQL. It isn't SECURITY DEFINER so the only risk I think it can pose is if you allow users to run arbitrary SQL predicates or call arbitrary fu …

How to migrate postgreSQL on EC2 instance to AWS RDS?

You can't do it with minimal downtime, or not easily anyway. RDS doesn't support importing base backups and doing streaming replication to/from outside servers. See Getting WAL from AWS RDS and Movi …

Why use RDS over EC2 for Postgres?

Like most things, it's a cost vs effort/complexity trade-off. RDS is easier, but less flexible, and costs more for the same level of performance. (In particular, note that there's no way to replicat …

RDS crosstab: ERROR: permission denied for language c

RDS doesn't let you install arbitrary C functions. It's a restricted environment. crosstab is part of the tablefunc extension. You may be able to CREATE EXTENSION tablefunc if it's on the whitelist b …

How to schedule PostgreSQL replication?

You can use pg_basebackup to take a copy of the PostgreSQL database over the replication protocol. It copies the whole DB though, it isn't incremental. You'll want to use the --xlog-method=stream argu …
