What are user connections - when are the created and destroyed?
Ah, I don't even have SELECT privileges for mysql.user, but a chat with support reveled they have put rate limiting on us because of too many slow queries. regardless, I found your post informative & helpful as always.

@jcolebrand OK /sbin/ifconfig does nothing by \sbin\ifconfig does something. . . I know nothing about OS/Servers, but our tech support is somehow even more ignorant . . .
